A Little After the Millennium
Markus Amm, Anne Collier, Liam Gillick, Philippe Parreno, Tobias Rehberger, Rebecca Warren 20 October - 20 November 2020 Gallery Baton is pleased to present “A Little After The Millennium”, a group exhibition by six contemporary artists who are internationally acclaimed: Liam Gillick (b.1964), Rebecca Warren (b.1965), Markus Amm (b.1969), Philippe Parreno (b.1964), Anne Collier (b.1970), and Tobias Rehberger (b.1966) from October 20th to November 20th. The exhibition began with the fundamental question of “Why does art exist?” in a situation where human lifestyle and social systems are threatened by the pandemic. Through a selection of works by the artists who have been at the forefront of the international art scene and broadened the horizons of contemporary art, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the existence of art to each of us at this point. Her Sides of Us 27 August - 29 September 2020 Gallery Baton is pleased to present ‘Her Sides of Us’, a solo exhibition by Jinnie Seo, from August 27th to September 29th, 2020. Seo creates a visionary landscape of her mind delving into certain sensibilities of emotions dwelling in her consciousness. Her creative approach starts with the rhythmic interplay of hand gestures, which movement tells intimate stories unfurling from her memories. The course of her methodology includes carefully unwinding strands of emotions forming a series of visual lexicons and ultimately materializing them in the realm of reality. An emotion is a state of intuitive feeling derived from experiences stemming from one’s surrounding space or interrelationship with others. These salient points trigger the immersive spatial and temporal transformation of the exhibition space encapsulating her core idea of on-site installation works. By constructing experiential space interwoven with personal memories, she shares her visualized emotion with the viewers and invites them to have their own experiences of consciousness. Read more -
Yoon Suk One
Enfolding Landscape 3 July - 7 August 2020 Gallery Baton is pleased to announce ‘Enfolding Landscape’, a solo exhibition by Yoon Suk One (b.1983) from 3rd July to 7th August. Yoon treats painting as a medium for documenting his unique observation and contemplation. In many cases, artists employ photography as an effective means of supplementing evanescent visual memories. Like this tendency, Yoon also constructs a fundamental resource of his practice by collecting and taking pictures of city landscapes constantly shifting their appearances depending on the change of light and seasons. For years, Yoon has paid attention to plants, especially flowers and foliage plants artificially cultivated for an ornamental purpose. In his previous works, ‘Dry Plant’ series, he attempted to draw the profound theme—the cycle of nature—into his practice by paradoxically and splendidly portraying ‘the last moment’ of the plants whose commercial value as a product no longer operates. Truths that would be maddening without love 18 March - 13 May 2020 Gallery Baton is pleased to announce ‘Truths that would be maddening without love’, a solo exhibition by Tobias Rehberger (b. 1966) from 18th March to 13th May. Tobias Rehberger is a German artist who has achieved international repute in winning the Golden Lion Award at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009) and having solo exhibitions at numerous prestigious institutions including Foundation Beyeler (Basel), Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai), Whitechaple Gallery (London), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Museum of Contemporary Art (Busan) and Art Sonje Center (Seoul). Rehberger, who began his career as a sculptor, has achieved his unique cross-disciplinary aesthetic whose broad range embraces images, objects, installations and collaborations. Though viewers are easily attracted by exceptionally sensual and intense colours and patterns of his works at a glimpse, his practice addresses multi-layered theoretical questions about ‘art’ itself instead of remaining as a mere visual amusement. Crossing dichotomous boundaries or hierarchies which revolve around dynamics of diverse genres and roles such as sculpture/installation/architecture, fine art/design, art/daily life and aesthetic/function, he also explores ‘in-between’ realms among those different fields consistently. In this context, his practice can hardly be included in a certain sphere; therefore, it is rather a conceptual hybrid, being serious and delightful, at the same time, abstract and poetic. Read more -
In Lieu of Higher Ground
Park Suk Won, Park Jang Nyun, Song Burnsoo 30 January - 29 February 2020 Gallery Baton is pleased to present ‘In Lieu of Higher Ground’, a group exhibition by three Korean contemporary artists, Park Suk Won, Park Jang Nyun and Song Burnsoo, from 30th January to 29th February, 2020. The exhibition attempts to highlight the life-long commitment to creation by three masters who have a great influence upon the process of establishing the current hybrid cultural-geography of ‘Korean contemporary art’ from its beginning period to the present phase which conveys diversified identities and zeitgeist. The title, ‘In Lieu of Higher Ground’, implies the remarkable achievement of the three artists whose life consequently became their artistic trajectories by embracing an attitude of seeking unity of the physical and the spiritual. As they have dedicated their entire life to investigating into aesthetic accomplishment and manifestation of their own creative world instead of chasing after personal fame and materialistic advancement, we dare to speak that they have silently but stubbornly broadened the scope of their artistic territories by exploring unknown realms from a perspective of a seeker rather than trying to set up another monument on the existing land—Korean contemporary art. Suzanne Song has been exploring ’space’ as a nonmaterial being and a conceptual object. To Song, the reproduced subject, space, is not something that can be defined in philosophical or physical terms but a 'specific and concrete space' that can be compiled and collected in her perceptual domain through experience. The viewer perceives this 'space' with a familiar feeling because this 'space' reminds one of the commonplace walls of schools, public institutions, and office spaces in many cultures. Read more -

Prelude / Subversion
Rodney Graham, David Diao, Koen van den Broek, Je Yeo Ran, Oh You Kyeong 18 October - 19 November Simon Morley
Kiss Me Deadly 11 March - 11 April 2015 Gallery Baton is pleased to showcase the solo exhibition of Simon Morley (b. 1958) “Kiss me deadly” from March 11th to April 11th at the Apgujeong exhibition space. Simon Morley’s exhibition at Gallery Baton presents a group of new paintings that bring cinema and literature into contact upon the monochrome surface of painting. The title of the exhibition, ‘Kiss Me Deadly’ is that of a classic Hollywood ‘film noir’ directed by Robert Aldrich made in 1955, starring Ralph Meeker as a tough private detective who kisses several women while trying to foil a plot to steal radioactive waste. The act of kissing and the threat of nuclear Armageddon are rather unsubtly bonded to each other in what is essentially a movie of Cold War paranoia. The font he has used throughout is called ‘American Typewriter’. These words appear in orderly rows, and are painted in relief and just a tone lighter than the rest of the painting. They cast shadows, and so are more clearly present, responding to the sense of touch. Read more -
