Andi Fischer Germany, b. 1987

Overview
Andi Fischer is known for his colorful, primitive, gestural line-work figurative paintings. His seemingly childlike style of cribbled hatchings, dots, and rough stick lines reflects his interest in the uninhibited yet purposeful storytelling of children’s drawings, and it incorporates characteristics reminiscent of Art Brut. He has developed his own aesthetic based on a knowledge of Western art history and skilled technique, while embracing a youthful spirit and a realm of freedom in form. His work which encompasses painting and sculpture, deliberately provokes contradictory experiences in the viewer’s approach to this pure form that tests the boundaries of our expectations of art.

The nature-friendly motifs that appear repeatedly in his works are borrowed from the works of Western art masters, but traditional symbols are excluded and reinterpreted through the modern perspective of the artist and his audience. The composition of the quick sketches using oilsticks may seem infantile but there is also a pleasant sense of liberation in the gestures of the wild animals depicted as if capturing the moment; the subtle tension behind their playful expressions; the abstraction of the white background and the bold color combinations, and the absurd arrangement between elements. The repeated process of experimentation that the artist has undergone in order to arrive at the spontaneous and intuitive harmony of his present work is evident, as is his determination not to compromise with a stereotyped style in order to stand out as a creator who embraces the diversity of contemporary art of his time.

Andi Fischer is a Berlin-based artist who received early recognition in European contemporary art scene with the prestigious TOY Berlin Masters Award after his graduate from the Universität der Künste in Berlin in 2018. He has held solo exhibition at Palma de Mallorca(2023, ES) and participated in group exhibitions at Museum Bensheim(2022, DE) and Kunstverein Ulm(2020, DE). His works are included in the collections of Blanca and Boja Thyssen - Bornemisza Collection, Burger Collection, Fundación AMMA and Hildebrand Collection.
