Gallery Baton is pleased to present A Hundred Suns, a solo exhibition by Jimok Choi (b. 1981) from 20 August to 20 September. The exhibition presents paintings based on afterimage effects, the culmination of Choi's long-standing exploration of the act of seeing, which he has been fascinated by since his studies in Germany.
The works imply an extended interest in the artist's subjective perception of the afterimage of light, intense colours and the materiality of painting. The images created by the artist's unique sensory system in response to external stimuli are named 'Shadow of the Sun', 'The Light of Absence', and 'Chromatic Shadow', and are transformed into colourful, dreamlike abstract paintings. His solo exhibition at Baton during Frieze Seoul in September triggers immediate afterimages and optical illusions in the viewer, creating a new aesthetic experience that joins the artist's inevitable efforts to overcome the reproductive limitations of painting.
