Luma Foundation, Arles: 2021

Luma Signage System, 2021

Powder coated aluminium, silkscreen, vinyl text, cut plastic

Over the last 30 years the artist has produced a number of signage works for various institutions. These works sit in a grey area in relation to traditional art production, taking over the organizational aesthetic of each place. At Luma Arles the artist has produced the entire signage system for the whole site. The resulting signage is both an artwork and a functional system.

Oriented Discussion Platforms, 2021

Vinyl wrapped aluminium, stainless steel

A series of free-standing “platforms” located at key sites at Luma Arles. The works operate in parallel to the artists’ Luma Arles Signage System. Since the mid 1990s Liam Gillick has produced a number of Discussion Platforms. The works designate spaces that are semi-autonomous in relation to the architectural context. There are no instructions or obligations in relation to the viewer however they offer sites for non-directed gathering and reflection.

At Luma Arles the works are “signs without signage” that mark certain locations where one might pause and reflect before moving on, neither participating in or truly outside the experience of the locale.

Laguna Gloria, 2021

PVC coated PE fabric and printed cut vinyl
Sound loop, 23min 32secs

The work is derived from the film Margin Time 2: The Heavenly Lagoon which was filmed at Laguna Gloria in Austin, Texas in the spring of 2013. The original film is divided into four sections - alternating between black and white and color. Still from the film have been transferred to the walls and the original film soundtrack now forms an endless background loop to activities.
